"This is a Public Service Announcement"

While this may not be as cheesy as the AFN PSAs that we're all forced to watch overseas, enjoy this short PSA about drinking in the military.  Currently binge drinking rates are on the rise in the military.  The post 9-11 veteran rate is already 10% higher than our predecessors. Combat veterans in this post 9-11 era even have a rate 10% higher than non combat vets.  To put it in perspective, there are currently 2.7 million men and women who have served in the Global War on Terror, and the statistics show that at least 27% are heavy drinkers and 55% partake in binge drinking.

Bottom line: Be responsible! One or two drinks a couple times per week is fine.  But don't be "that guy" that ruins it for the rest of us.

  2. I really appreciate that someone dedicated a blog to military fitness! I feel like it's a growing field as far as people that want to work in tactical strength and conditioning and its really very interesting. Many of the physical demands of the military go way above and beyond those of a tradition athlete so it's great to see the military perspective on things. Thank you for your service!

  3. This is a very good topic for a blog since military fitness is strongly affected by binge drinking. The military goes through a lot and deals with a lot so we need to make sure they are not drinking too much while on duty.

  4. Matt, what a great topic!!! I served 5 years in the Marine Corps, and I can definitely say I agree with you 100% that too many military members, both active and retired, struggle with alcohol and other addictive substances. It's something we hear about all the time and something I've witnessed first hand. It's important for military personnel to have quick, easy, and free access to counseling and other means of support when battling these issues.
